For in the mind of man lies the secret of his ability to resist, to conquer and finally to govern the circumstances of his life, and only by the discovery of that secret will he ever be able to realise completely the condition of mens sana in corpore sano.
— F. M. Alexander, Man's Supreme Inheritance

Discovery

F.M. Alexander was a successful Australian actor who lost his voice. Finding relief only through rest, he concluded that the problem was something of his own doing. He turned to mirrors and methodical self-study to find the source of strain.  He recognized his harmful habits and chose a new reaction, allowing a more natural coordination of the body to return. This practical method, in use for over one hundred years, is known as the Alexander Technique. It is an intelligent tool for life which harnesses the plasticity of the brain and considers the body as a whole.  The method can be applied to the most mundane act of sitting, to the performance of extraordinary skill.
